Cultural Identity and Social Status
A Study on the Bantang Ritual in the Bajo Society
Keywords:
batang ritual, bajo community, symbolism, social status, cultural identityAbstract
This study delves into the practice and symbolism of the Bantang ritual within the Bajo community, an integral part of birth celebrations and social status recognition. Through deep observation and interviews, this research deciphered the three types of Bantang—Bantang, Bantang Boe, and Bantang Pote—and the unique symbols and elements used in each stage of the ritual. This ritual not only celebrates births but also serves as an expression of the social, economic, and cultural values of the Bajo community. Despite certain limitations, this research demonstrates how rituals and symbolism play a role in maintaining and reproducing social and cultural identity, marking directions for further research, such as ritual adaptations in different contexts.
