Education on the Utilization of Cashew Apples to Increase the Economic Value of the Kontunaga Community

Abstract

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) has many benefits, but in Kontunaga Village, Muna Regency, its use is still limited to the seeds only. The cashew apple part is discarded and left to rot, even though it can be processed into various economically valuable products, such as syrup, wine, candied sweets, or vegetable dishes. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of the community about the benefits of cashew apples and help them utilize the fruit so it is not wasted. The methods used were lectures and discussions, which were held for one day on November 11, 2017, in Kontunaga Village. The participants of this activity were 30 community members, especially those who own cashew plantations. The extension material covered the benefits of cashew as traditional medicine and the utilization of its cashew apple as traditional food. The results showed that the community was very enthusiastic and responded positively to the activity. It is hoped that this activity will serve as initial information for the community to be able to practice processing cashew apples into valuable economic products.
