Abstract

Disaster preparedness in school environments is a critical component of risk mitigation efforts, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Kendari City. This community engagement initiative aimed to enhance disaster awareness and preparedness skills among students and teachers at SMAS Kartika XX-2 through the implementation of a digital application featuring a panic button with a three-color alert system (green, yellow, red) used during evacuation simulations. The approach employed was Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), encompassing stages of application design, trial and simulation, mentoring, and evaluation. The results indicate that the application is user-friendly, effective in conveying disaster alert information, and encourages active student participation in simulations. A total of 90% of respondents reported the application was easy to operate, and 88% felt more prepared to face potential disasters. The activity also strengthened the role of teachers and supported the declaration of the school as a disaster-resilient institution. The panic button feature holds promise for replication in other schools as a technology-based disaster education tool.
